Field Hockey Drops Nail Biter, 2-1

Box Score

Oct. 22 –
The Oberlin College field hockey team brought back some terrific team defense but was unable to get enough going on offense to beat Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana on this day, dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 decision.

Sophomore defender Natasha Cohan scored the only goal for the Yeowomen, her fourth of the season, good for second place on the teams scoring list. However, despite the goal from Cohan, Oberlin dropped its second one-goal game to the Quakers this year.

The Quakers grabbed 1-0 lead at the break, before extending their lead in the 51st-minute on a Nicole VanScyoc goal - which proved to be the difference.

In the back and forth game with plenty of action in the neutral zone, Oberlin got a big lift from do-it-all junior Danielle Gilliam who filled in at goalie for Oberlin and recorded two saves.

Head Coach Deb Ranieri said, “It was nice to see Tasha get us on the board, but we had more opportunities out there that we were just unable to capitalize on.”

Oberlin finished with a slight 7-6 advantage in shots and also had a distinct 8-5 edge on penalty corners.

The Yeowomen will get back to work this week and will play their final home game in the 2008 season Tuesday October 28 at 4:00 pm.
