Oberlin, Ohio – Back on home turf, the Oberlin College football team hosted Wabash (RV) on Saturday afternoon. Despite holding the Little Giants scoreless in the third quarter, the Yeomen fell 34-7 to the national powerhouse.
Massimo Vliet got the starting nod at quarterback, backed up by
Ben Suler and
Henry Behrens.
JJ Racz,
CJ Cooper II, and
Alex Silverman led the receiving corps, led by Racz with 28yds and a touchdown.
Daniel Pressley carried the bulk of the ground game responsibilities, carrying the ball 13 times.
Kingston Askerneese led the defense, against collecting 12 total tackles including six solos, two for loss, and a sack that resulted in a 63-yard loss for the Little Giants. Alongside the senior was
Andrew Foley and
Peyton Rough with nine tackles each; Foley led the team with eight solo tackles and two pass breakups. Both
Abraham Cromartie V and Askerneese forced fumbles in the contest.
On Wabash's second drive of the game, the Crimson and Gold defense swarmed the Little Giants, causing a fumble that trickles more than 60 yards in their favor. Askerneese earned QB sack and Rough recovered the ball for a 1st down at the Wabash 22-yard line. On the ensuing drive, the Yeomen struggled to capitalize on the defensive play and turned the ball over on downs.
With renewed energy after the half, Oberlin began their drive in good position at midfield. Suler's pass to Racz gained seven yards and put the Yeomen in Wabash territory. Followed by a pass interference penalty on the defense, Oberlin set up 1st and 10 at the 32-yard line. On the next snap, Vliet connected with Silverman for another first down, just outside the redzone. Dropping back into the pocket, Vliet found Racz in the short corner of the endzone. Initially broken up by the defense, Racz stretched out to make the catch and secure Oberlin's first touchdown of the day.
The momentum carried forward for the Crimson and Gold after the defense stuffed the Little Giants at the line of scrimmage to force a punt. Holding Wabash scoreless in the third quarter, the Yeomen gave up just one score in the final 30 minutes of action, ultimately dropped the conference contest 34-7.
The Yeomen return to the grid iron next Saturday, September 26 when they host conference newcomers No. 19 WashU. Kickoff against the nationally-ranked Bears is set for 12 p.m.
