Oberlin, Ohio – As two of the oldest programs in college football, Oberlin College football and No. 19 WashU combined for 275 of history in Knowlton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The matchup marks the first time Oberlin has played against the Bears, and the first meeting between the two football giants since WashU joined the North Coast Athletic Conference this season.
The quarterback committee of
Massimo Vliet and
Ben Suler led the offense, with the help of sophomore
Henry Behrens. On the ground,
Daniel Pressley earned the bulk of the payload, with additional support from
Pace Capone,
Ben Rosenblatt,
JJ Racz, and
CJ Cooper II.
The receiving corps saw a balanced effort from five Yeomen, led by Racz with three receptions.
Alex Silverman, Cooper II, Racz, Rosenblatt, and Pressley accounted for a pair of receptions each.
Ramzey Lewis anchored the defense with seven solo tackles and a tackle for loss that set the Bears back ten yards.
Kingston Askerneese and
Peyton Rough added another 18 tackles combined, while Askerneese tallied a pass breakup and Rough added a TFL.
Cameron Burke also caused havoc for WashU's receivers with a pass breakup and a pair of tackles.
Ako Taylor II and
James Chikwe also finished with 15 tackles combined.
After a first half that saw the Crimson and Gold challenged by the national powerhouse, the Yeomen gained momentum on their first drive of the third quarter. On the opening play, Vliet completed a short pass in the middle to Silverman, who ran the ball 13 yards for a first down. Drawing a penalty for 'Roughing the Passer' the Yeomen moved into WashU territory for a fresh set of downs. Suler completed the next pass to Pressley, before another to Silverman on a 4th & 8. Moving the chains, Rosenblatt added another two yards to the drive to get to the Bears' 33-yard line. Unable to connect on the next two passes, Oberlin's turned over the ball on downs.
The Yeomen battled against the St. Louis Bears, but ultimately fell short in the fight, dropping the contest 79-0. Oberlin hits the road for their next contest, taking on another nationally-ranked opponent in the No. 23 DePauw Tigers next Saturday, October 3. Kickoff in Indiana is set for 1 p.m.
