Yeomen Clinch Historic Win over #26 DePauw

By Rowan Ing '28

Greencastle, Indiana - Shortly after women's tennis' 4-3 victory, Oberlin College men's tennis followed with a 4-3 victory of their own against #26 DePauw on the team's indoor courts.

Higher-up in multiple rankings, DePauw has been the target of the Yeomen since the beginning of the season, making this a landmark victory for Oberlin and a step towards achieving greater results at the Conference Tournament next weekend. This win also drives the team's overall record to 13-6 (5-2) in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Crimson and Gold faced a difficult start in doubles. Shawn Lisann and Cameron Weiss at No. 1 doubles were quickly dispatched 6-2. Zain Makada and Enrique Margain fared somewhat better on court two, losing 6-3. Sebastien Naginski and Dash Smith at No. 3 doubles had the advantage with a 5-3 lead, however, that turned to 6-6. The DePauw No. 3 doubles team, Scott Anderson and Thomas Hargreave, started hitting harder and landing more shots, forcing a tiebreaker and winning 7-0.

Down 1-0, the Yeomen concentrated hard on the singles round, requiring four matches to win. After Smith at No. 1 singles went down first, the comeback became more daunting. Though he was doing more than keeping up, exchanging massive serves against DePauw No. 1, Finley Buelte, managed to take advantage of a few strategic breaks to win 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

Finding themselves down even further, 2-0, Oberlin's No. 6 and No. 5 players, Naginski and Weiss, were able to make up for the losses and tie the dual match score 2-2. Naginski stayed in his element, hitting balls high and heavy while adding slices and drives to the mix. The senior took a 6-0, 6-4 victory for Oberlin. Weiss followed soon after, finding himself 5-5 in the first set before deciding to win the next five games to steal the match momentum. The first-year won 7-5, 6-3.

Doubles partners Makada and Margain at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, competed hard. Makada fought for his first set in a seven-point tiebreaker, winning 7-6 (7-4) and then cruised to a second set win, 6-3. Margain found more difficulties, the lefty's game did not get along well against Viktor Ronnberg's massive backhand. Margain fought hard as well, but lost, 6-4, 7-5.

Tied 3-3, everything came down to Lisann at No. 2 singles. Though he went down fast in the first set, 6-2, the senior came back just as quickly in the second set 6-3. The Obie landed sliding volleys, overheads, and ran for his life to secure the third set, coming out on top, 6-4. Lisann clinched for the Yeomen and ushered in Oberlin's first regular season victory against DePauw on the Tiger's home courts in program history.

Post-match, Lisann commented, "I feel amazing. I think this is definitely the biggest win I've had and the team's had in my time here. Coach Brady Huggett was amazing out there, always had the right things to say and [I] just feel great to contribute to the team win after some tough losses earlier in the season. I am glad I can repay the team today and excited to celebrate."

For their final match of the season before conferences, Oberlin will play tomorrow, Sunday, April 19. The Crimson and Gold will clash with Wittenberg on their home courts in Springfield, Ohio.
