Hilton Head, South Carolina – Early Wednesday morning, the Oberlin College women's tennis team played against the Augustana Vikings in their third of four spring break matches. The Crimson and Gold saw victories all across the board today, as they beat the Vikings 7-0 and raised the team's record to 7-3.
The cloudy skies did not put a damper on the team's energy, with Oberlin taking all three doubles matches to secure the first point. No. 3 doubles, Rachel Allen and Olivia Wollner, along with No. 2 doubles, Scarlett Kingston and Eva Lopez, finished their sets almost simultaneously, producing scores of 6-1 and 6-2, respectively. Junior Freya Rahm and sophomore Hannah Soong had a tougher match-up at No. 1 doubles. But they buckled up for some more difficult points, turning a 5-3 lead into a 6-4 win.
Carrying the doubles momentum, singles went by quickly for Oberlin. Not letting the cold keep her down, Olivia Guzman secured the first singles point at No. 6 singles in a clean 6-1, 6-1 victory. Just one court over at No. 5 singles, Rahm followed Guzman with a 6-0, 6-0 win a minute later. Her win made it 3-0, only one more point to victory for the Crimson and Gold.
Doubles partners Kingston and Lopez finished almost in unison on their bank of two courts. Lopez closed out her match 6-2, 6-3 and clinched the dual match for Oberlin. Kingston finished five minutes later, 6-3, 6-1.
First-year Stella Kollmansberger at No. 1 singles and Allen at No. 2 singles faced some more difficulties. Kollmansberger made sure to take the lead in her match, keeping her opponent down in order to win 6-2, 7-5. Allen found herself caught in a back-and-forth battle with her opponent in the first set. She struck towards the end of the first set, running away with the match in a tiebreaker, 7-5, and a second set, 6-3.
When asked about the status of the team, Kingston said, "I think we've done a really good job of being gritty and fighting for every point like it's the only one we have. The team's energy kind of helps with that. Personally, I think that just being outside brings a new energy to it. Our team feels really whole right now."
Oberlin prepares for a quick turnaround tomorrow, March 25, when they play Colby at 5:00 p.m. in the final match of the Hilton Head series.
