Hilton Head, South Carolina – On a cool Thursday evening, the Oberlin College women's tennis team played #36 Colby. While the odds were not stacked in the Crimson and Gold's favor, they managed to find a victory at No. 6 singles and learned much from the dual match in a 6-1 loss. This final match in Oberlin's spring break series at Hilton Head puts their spring break record to 3-1 and the season's record to 7-4.
Partners Freya Rahm and Hannah Soong gave their full effort on court one, but the pair lost 6-0 to Colby's Micheala Landry and Isabella Suk. Sophomores Scarlett Kingston and Rachel Allen had a strong start at No. 2, holding and breaking, but their opponents quickly stole the momentum and won 6-3. On court 3 doubles, first-year Stella Kollmansberger and sophomore Olivia Wollner broke out from a 3-0 deficit and managed to tie the score 3-3. Facing retaliation from their opponents, the Mules ended the set 6-4.
The doubles point loss did not deter Oberlin's efforts as they transitioned to singles. Kollmansberger fought hard, but found no luck against Colby's No. 1, Ella Novion, losing 6-0, 6-1. Despite a strong effort, Kingston faced similar difficulties at No. 3, going down 6-1, 6-0. The clinch for Colby followed the win on court 2. Allen's plays were able to chip off two games in a 6-1, 6-1 loss. Eva Lopez played a hard-fought match, though the scoreline shows a 6-1, 6-1 loss at No. 4.
Oberlin's No. 5 and No. 6 matches had great performances. Rahm went down in the first set 6-1. Resetting in the second set, the senior was able to bring the fight to her opponent, taking the lead at 2-1 and carrying the momentum through 5-1. Her opponent, Amelie Gal, made an impressive six-game comeback, taking the match from Rahm 6-1, 7-5. Once again, the last holdout on court was first-year Olivia Guzman. More than an hour after the other singles matches stopped, Guzman emerged victorious in a 7-6, 6-3 win.
When asked about the dual match, Guzman said, "I'm sad that we lost, but I'm happy that despite all odds, I've prevailed. When I played, I was telling myself, 'I have to win,' and then I got it. Everyone was watching us. It was super great."
Oberlin takes a much-needed rest after their four spring break matches over the last five days. The Crimson and Gold return to action when they host Kenyon on Saturday, April 4, at the Hunsinger Courts. Play is expected to begin at 9:30 a.m.
