Women’s Tennis Cages Falcons in First On-the-Road Win

By Rowan Ing '28

Misenheimer, North Carolina – In the first of a series of Oberlin College women's tennis matches on the road, the Crimson and Gold won in a 6-1 shutdown against the Pfeiffer Falcons. This win raises the team's 2026 season record to 5-3.

Starting with doubles, junior Rachel Allen and sophomore Hannah Soong represented Oberlin in one doubles, taking a tough loss to the Pfeiffer duo, Fanny Apostolou and Haley Ingenito, 6-1. Stella Kollmansberger and Olivia Wollner at three doubles ushered in a change in momentum for Oberlin, winning 6-3. The sophomore team, Scarlett Kingston and Eva Lopez, competed in a close set, ending in a seven-point tiebreaker that decided both the match and the doubles point. They took both, winning 7-6 (7-3).

Taking advantage of the 1-0 momentum in singles, Kollmansberger led the team in a fast 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1. Following their one, three matches: Allen at No. 3, Lopez at No. 4, and Guzman at No. 6 completed their matches at close to exactly the same time, sealing the victory for Oberlin, 5-0.

Allen, her play style matching well with the outdoor conditions, took a 6-3, 6-1 win. Lopez won 6-4, 6-2, covering the width and length of the court with consistent ground strokes and volleys. Freshman Olivia Guzman stayed consistent as well, taking one point at a time on the way to a 6-0, 6-1 win.

The remaining two matches played by Rahm and Kingston would wrap up the dual match. Rahm maintained a good output throughout the match, taking two games for every one her opponent won, claiming a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5. Kingston grappled for the momentum at the No. 2 spot, but struggled after an initial 3-0 lead in the first set, losing 6-4, 6-1.

Overall, this victory marks a good start to the women's series of four spring break matches from March 21 to March 26 against Pfeiffer, Savannah, Augustana, and Colby. The next destination for women's tennis is Savannah, where they will face off against Savannah State on Monday, March 23, at 3 p.m.
