Elkhart, Indiana – Traveling west for a pair of matches, the Oberlin College women's tennis team first beat Saint Mary's 4-3, then knocked off Saint Francis, 5-0. The 2-0 weekend improves the Crimson and Gold's season record to 4-1 in dual matches.
First taking on Saint Mary's, the Yeowomen struggled to build early momentum in doubles competition.
Stella Kollmansberger and
Olivia Wollner teamed up on court two, but fell 6-1.
Eva Lopez and
Hannah Soong followed on court three with a 6-3 loss. With the doubles point clinched,
Freya Rahm and
Rachel Allen conceded the final match, 6-4 to a strong duo of Emma Kealy and Shannon Dudy.
In singles play, Saint Mary's continued to roll from their doubles momentum, getting wins on court four and six. On No. 4, Rahm fell 6-4, 6-1, before
Olivia Guzman suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss. Down 3-0, Oberlin needed a four-match rally to win the contest.
Beginning with Kollmansberger at No. 1 singles, the rookie got Oberlin's first point taking down Kealy 6-3, 6-4. Lopez picked up the Crimson and Gold's next point with a 0-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory on court two.
Back within one point of the Belles' lead, Allen secured the equalizer with a tiebreaker victory at No. 3 singles. The junior won 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 to put the pressure on Wollner for the winning point. On court five, Wollner won the first set 7-5, and stormed to a second set victory 6-1.
With their first match of the day standing as a win, Oberlin turned the page to take on Saint Francis.
The Yeowomen carried their momentum into their second match, dominating in doubles competition. Lopez and Soong grabbed a 6-0 win on court two, just before Kollmansberger and Rahm clinched the point with a 6-3 on the top court. Guzman and
Robyn Gurujal rounded out the perfect doubles play with a 6-4 on No. 3.
Guzman continued to disrupt the Cougars' game plan with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win on court four. Up 2-0, Oberlin extended their lead to 3-0 with Soong's 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Clinching the victory, Gurujal finished a perfect day with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six. Lopez grabbed the Yeowomen's final win, a 6-2, 6-0 scorcher before the match ended due to time restrictions regarding the courts.
Prior to the end of the match Allen, on the top court, was up 6-2 in her match, and Wollner was up 6-1 in her match at No. 3.
"Today was a true team effort." Head Coach
Magda Stepnik continues, "We showcased our depth and competed as one unit. We never lost belief and persevered when it mattered most."
