Oberlin, Ohio – Maintaining an undefeated singles record and clinching victory for Oberlin in her second-straight match, Oberlin College women's tennis first-year
Olivia Guzman lifted Oberlin to a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon.
"When we played last week I was also the deciding match, but I really felt more pressure today because we've been talking about wanting to beat his team all week." Guzman continues. "It feels great knowing that I have a team supporting me through all of my wins. I know that even if it wasn't the deciding match, I know that we are always supporting each other and a win for me is a win for the team. It's a good indicator that we've started the season really strong."
Oberlin came out strong in doubles play, winning at No. 2 and No. 3. Despite a 6-1 loss on the top court from
Rachel Allen and
Freya Rahm, the Yeowomen responded with a 6-4 win from
Eva Lopez and
Scarlett Kingston.
Stella Kollmansberger and
Olivia Wollner clinched the doubles point with another 6-4 victory.
In singles, the Hornets responded right away with back-to-back wins over No. 2 Kingston (6-0, 6-1) and No. 1 Kollmansberger (6-2, 6-1). Down 2-1, Allen responded with 6-2, 6-2 win on court four to even the match score. Bouncing back from a first set loss (4-6), Lopez won the second set 6-3 to force a third frame. The foes went back-and-forth at the net, but the sophomore Obie came out on top with a 7-5 victory.
On court five, Rahm swapped 24 games with her opponent, but Kalamazoo's Daryn Krause came in clutch in the final minutes to earn a 7-5, 7-5 win. With the entire match coming down to the final court, Guzman rallied from behind for victory. Losing the 6(5)-7 tiebreaker in the first set, the rookie shifted into high gear for a dominate 6-2 win in the second. With momentum at her back, Guzman converted a 5-2 lead into a 6-4 victory to win the day.
Head Coach
Magda Stepnik notes her team's resilience in the last couple of contests. "We've been playing very good tennis for the past two matches and the goal for today was to really show our grit. Every player showcased that and left their heart on the court to get this team win."
