Ada, Ohio – Hitting the road for the first time this of the year, the Oberlin College women's tennis team fell in a tough matchup against Ohio Northern. The Polar Bears got the best of the Crimson and Gold 6-1 to push the Yeowomen back to 1-1 on the season.
In doubles action,
Eva Lopez and
Scarlett Kingston teamed up on court one, but fell 6-0 to their counterparts.
Rachel Allen and
Freya Rahm gained little more momentum, but also came up short with a 6-1 loss at No. 2. With the doubles point already conceded,
Stella Kollmansberger and
Olivia Wollner finished their match on the wrong side of a 6-1 score.
In doubles action, Wollner wrapped her match first, falling 6-0, 6-0 on court six. Allen finished next with a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline, just ahead of Lopez (4-6, 6-2, 10-5) who battled to a tiebreaker but came up short.
With the Polar Bears clinching the match 4-0, three courts remained for Oberlin to find a win. After losing the first set 6-3, Rahm looked to even the match with a tiebreaker, but her run ended early at 7-6(5). In No. 2 singles, Kingston put up a good fight with a 6-4 loss in the first set. Her steam soon ran out when Lauren Okrainec caught win and won 6-2 in the second.
Oberlin's lone bright spot came on the top singles court with a thriller from Kollmansberger. Losing the first set 6-2, the rookie came back for a big 6-3 win to force a tiebreaker. Taking it to extra points, Kollmansberger grabbed the 11-9 victory to earn a point for the Crimson and Gold.
The Yeowomen have a quick turnaround when they come back to Oberlin tomorrow, February 22 for a home match against Kalamazoo. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
