Ada, Ohio - Saturday, the Oberlin College men's tennis adventured north to face-off against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears. Historically, matches with ONU have been close with results depending on a single match. That was not the case this week, as Oberlin won 5-2, boosting their record to 4-2 in the 2026 season.
Oberlin started doubles off fast and furious. Second-year Enrique Margain and first-year Cameron Weiss won 6-2 at No. 1. Fourth-years, Shawn Lisann and Sebastian Naginski also finished off their opponents, winning 6-3 at No. 3. Second-years Max Brose and Oliver Knijnenburg ran into some more difficulties at No. 2. Though it was a competitive and dynamic match, the pair ended up losing 6-2.
Singles started off tough. No. 6, Brose, fought hard, but his renowned grit was not enough for the match as he lost 6-2, 6-2. Evening out singles, first-year Dash Smith slammed his way to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3.
Weiss played the No. 5 match with control, ease, and some yelling, securing a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Margain started off with an early lead at No. 4, winning the first set 7-5. The lead was closed in the second set (6-0), and the sophomore lost by just two points in a third set tiebreaker, 10-8.
With a 3-2 lead, Oberlin's results were up to the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, Lisann and third-year Zain Makada, respectively. In his first clinch of the 2026 spring season, Lisann performed under pressure and secured a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 victory at No. 1, winning the dual match for Oberlin. Following the victory, Makada made a comeback in his competitive match at No. 2, securing a 6-7 (8), 6-3, 10-7 win.
When asked about his singles win, Lisann answered, "It feels great. It was much needed, [and it's] gonna be great for confidence going into the next matches. But just pumped to contribute to the team win and very happy." Notably, these are Lisann's 74th and 75th wins in his career, including singles and doubles, and the end of a long dry period for the No. 1.
Oberlin men's tennis will be back Saturday, February 28, when they challenge Hope on their home courts in Holland, Michigan.
