Box Score Gambier, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team rallied past Rhodes 4-3 Friday night, overcoming a 3-1 deficit. The squad moves to 2-1 on the season in dual matches.
Hosted in Gambier, Ohio, the neutral-site match saw Rhodes take the doubles point with wins at No. 1 (6-2) over Shawn Lisaan and
Dash Smith, and No. 2 (6-2) over
Zain Makada and
Sebastien Naginski.
Cameron Weiss and
Enrique Margain Rangel earned Oberlin's lone doubles win at No. 3, 6-4.
In singles, Oberlin split the top two courts. Senior Lisann fell at No. 1, 6-2, 7-6, and junior Makada dropped No. 2, 6-4, 6-3.
The comeback started in the middle of the lineup. Smith won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3, and Margain continued his strong stretch with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4. This victory marks Margain's fifth win in the last six matches.
Sophomore
Max Brose, known for his big backhand, rolled 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 to tie the match at 3-3 with just one match remaining.
With everything on the line for first-year Weiss at No. 5, the rookie delivered his first career clinch with a 7-5, 6-1 win, sealing the 4–3 victory for the Crimson and Gold.
"Our team showcased a master class in resiliency," Head Coach
Eric Ishida adds, "We stuck to our game plan and took care of business by continuing to make balls and stay focused." Of his rookie Weiss, "Cam played like a veteran today against a very good opponent. To come out of a close first set and use his momentum to secure the second set is exactly what you hope to see."
The Yeomen have a quick turnaround for their next match, tomorrow, February 14, on home court. Oberlin takes on Lake Forest in their home opener, set to begin at 1 p.m.
