Wooster, Ohio – Fueled by a pair of goals and a strong defense, the Oberlin College men's soccer team captured their first conference victory of the season after defeating Wooster 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
"I'm really proud of the guys! They all worked together and committed to the game plan. I am so happy for them, and now we have to keep building," Head Coach
Blake New adds.
Wooster held a significant 29-5 shot advantage and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Appearing in the net for all 90 minutes of regulation,
Lukas Verling posted seven saves.
The Crimson and Gold defense held sturdy as the Fighting Scots delivered a trio of shots in the first seven minutes of the contest. Taking a free kick just outside the penalty box in the 41',
Christopher Plenca's shot soared to the left post, deflecting off the bar into the net to get the Yeomen on the board. Just over a minute later,
Rayaan Mohamed aimed to double Oberlin's lead, but his attempt was stopped by the Wooster goalkeeper.
Wooster scored the equalizer less than seven minutes into the second half from a penalty kick opportunity. Thirty seconds later,
Walter Gomez-Torres drilled a shot from within the penalty box to the bottom right to reclaim the lead. The Fighting Scots did not take their foot off the gas, recording 15 more shots within the period as the Yeomen defense continued to hold them off, clinching their first conference victory of the season.
Oberlin returns to North Coast action on Saturday, September 10, at Wittenberg. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
