Springfield, Ohio – Hitting the road for a weekend North Coast contest, the Oberlin College men's soccer team faced Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon.
Oberlin recorded six shots with three on goal while the Tigers notched 20 shots and 13 on goal. The Yeomen tallied seven corner kicks, just one shy of Wittenberg's corner kick opportunities.
Lukas Verling appeared in net for all 90 minutes of regulation, producing nine saves.
Wittenberg initiated offensive action, testing Verling with a shot in the fourth minute before delivering another shot two minutes later. Oberlin controlled the ball to their attacking end, with
Kinton Surface sending a shot to the bottom center as he was stopped by the Tigers' keeper. Continuing to hold off the offensive pressure of Wittenberg, Verling made two more stops until the Tigers got on the board at 21:05.
Christopher Plenca looked to score the equalizer in the 29' as his attempt soared just over the goal. Verling held Wittenberg out of the goal in the 32nd minute, but the Tigers' Asher Donahue gained control of the rebound to convert a second attempt into a goal. Late in the period,
Michael Dolton aimed to cut the deficit with a shot towards the bottom center, but was denied by the Wittenberg goalie.
Oberlin continued to fight in the second half, with a shot from
Ishaan Saini and Surface. Plenca launched another attempt on goal to the top left, as Wittenberg's keeper stood tall. The Tigers posted two goals within a two-minute span to extend their lead to 4-0. The Crimson and Gold fought to find a goal, but Wittenberg held them off, preserving the shutout.
The Yeomen return home on Wednesday, October 14, when they host Ohio Wesleyan. Evening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
