Lexington, Kentucky – Scoring the most goals in a single game in over 13 years, the Oberlin College field hockey team dominated North Coast opponent Transylvania 6-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The conference victory claims the single-game highlight from September 8, 2013, when they defeated Wheelock 8-0.
Clare Kammeier led the Crimson and Gold charge with three goals and one assist for seven points, garnering her first career hat trick and the first hat trick for Oberlin since 2013, when Ariana Enzerink '17 scored a trio of goals in Oberlin's victory over Wheelock. Carrying the high-scoring momentum,
Zoe Eisen,
Bella Tilford, and
Lucia Grant also added goals in the victory.
"
I'm incredibly proud of this group and the way they continue to show up and compete. Earning our fifth win of the season is an important step for this program and a reflection of the work these players continue to put in every day. Today, we were much more effective in moving the ball into dangerous attacking spaces and creating quality opportunities, and it was exciting to see that translate into six goals," Head Coach Jess West adds. "Clare had a tremendous day, and seeing Zoe score her first career goal was such a special moment for our team. What I continue to appreciate most is that this group is still hungry. They're not satisfied; they keep raising their standard, and they keep working for one another. We're proud of this win, and we're excited to keep building from it."
Although Transylvania held a 10-7 edge in penalty corners, Oberlin recorded a 15-9 advantage in shots with 14 on target. Goalkeepers
Mia Rubin and
Willow Maniscalco split halves in the cage, with Rubin earning the start, as Maniscalco posted a pair of saves and Rubin made one stop.
Kammeier launched the scoring triumph with a goal in the ninth minute of the contest, sending the ball past a pair of Transylvania defenders and the goalkeeper. In the second period, the senior extended Oberlin's lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals in a three-minute span, earning the early hat trick. Eisen scored her first career goal off a feed from Kammeier late in the second, allowing the Crimson and Gold to enter the halftime break with a 4-0 advantage.
Following an early penalty corner to start the third quarter,
Bella Tilford found the back of the cage after a relentless battle for possession with the Transylvania defense. The Pioneers aimed to get on the board with a pair of back-to-back corners as the Oberlin defense held sturdy, blocking the first attempt and Maniscalco stopping the second shot.
Transylvania halted Oberlin's chances of a shutout with a goal in the fourth. The Crimson and Gold continued to administer aggressive offensive pressure with shots from Tilford,
Samantha Finkelberg, and
Mary Rodman within a one-minute span as the Pioneers' keeper made a trio of saves. With the clock winding down and 11 seconds remaining in the contest, Grant sent the ball to the right corner of the goal in the 2v1 as Oberlin secured the 6-1 conference victory.
The Crimson and Gold return to action tomorrow, Monday, October 19, when they take on Meredith. Hosted at Wittenberg, the neutral game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
