Evans Embarks on Conference Heptathlon

Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College men's track and field junior Kit Evans competed in the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Championships heptathlon today, scoring 2,030 points to end the day in tenth position. Supported by a strong home crowd, Evans competed splendidly, improving on last year's marks in three events, and setting new personal bests in two.

With his performance today, Evans kicks off Oberlin's showing at the NCAC indoor track and field championships. The combined events – the heptathlon for men, and the pentathlon for women – are contested the weekend before the main championship, to allow athletes to return in individual events and relays. In the combined events, athletes earn points tied to their results in each event. The highest total score wins, testing athletes' versatility across both the track and the field.

The first event of the day was the 60m dash, in which Evans clocked 7.84 for 607 points. Although that run only placed him tenth, it was a personal best by .03 and improved last year's time by .14.

Next, in the long jump, Evans leaped 5.61m for 504 points, nearly matching his personal best of 5.67 from last year's championships. The tenth-place result was impressive, as Evans had not yet contested the long jump this season due to an ankle injury.

The shot put was Evans' strongest event, as he threw 10.37m for 508 points. The mark placed Evans third in that event and improved his personal best by 0.29m. Today's throw was over a meter farther than Evans threw last year.

Lastly, Evans cleared 1.53m in the high jump to score 411 points for ninth. Evans improved his season best by .08 and bettered last year's mark by .07.

Head Coach Ben Wach was pleased with Evans' performance today. "Kit hit new personal bests in the shot put and 60m, and stayed very close to his personal bests in the jumps," Wach said. "He's set himself up for a great heptathlon."

Tomorrow, Evans will complete the heptathlon with the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m. Although Evans must net 200 points to enter scoring position, the 1000m is a strong event for him, and weighted heavily in scoring. Joining Evans, junior Celia Vaughn will compete in the single-day pentathlon. The pentathlon starts at 11:30, while the heptathlon resumes at 12:15.
