Delaware, Ohio - Winning 28 out of 32 events, the Oberlin College men's and women's swim and dive teams cruised past Ohio Wesleyan on Friday night. The Yeowomen captured an impressive 199-86 victory while the Yeomen dominated the Battling Bishops 205-72.
Kicking off the meet strong, the 200-yard medley relay team of Maya Edwards, Yoo Soomin, Kendall McKelvey, and Nyrobi Whitfield powered to touch the wall with a winning time of 1:56.33. On the men's side in the same event, the quartet of James Moll, Charles Matia, Leo Powers, and Zach Black clinched the victory with a 1:36.48.Â
The distance swimmers claimed the top two positions on both sides of the 1,000-yard freestyle race. Katherine Noller won her first 1,000-yard (11:46.00) while Tripp Hawkins returned to the pool with a 12:31.55. Performing well for the Yeomen, rookies Mark Sferra (10:52.14) and Philip Cauwels (11:08.45) secured the top times.Â
In the 200-yard freestyle, Oberlin women swept the top two positions with Gretchen Lotter clocking in a 2:09.05 while Hailey Hamilton finished in 2:10.32.Â
Finishing in the top spots in the 50-yard backstroke, Moll and Riley Conklin posted times of 25.04 and 26.95, respectively.Â
Continuing the Crimson and Gold success in the 50-yard breaststroke, Yoo won the first of two individual victories, recording a time of 32.46, while Matia also delivered the first of two individual wins with a 27.96.
Oberlin dominated in the 100-yard butterfly as McKelvey (1:03.34) and Powers (52.25) won their respective races. In the 50-yard freestyle, Whitfield captured her first individual victory of the night with a 26.65 before Chahine Saïd recorded a winning time of 22.19.Â
Impressing in the diving events, Elizabeth Huettig registered a winning score of 116.50 in the 1-meter board while Sebastian Lagasse won on the men's side with a 130.70.
Winning her second of three individual victories, Lotter touched the wall in 59.57 in the 100-yard freestyle as Moll produced a winning time of 50.05.Â
In the 100-yard backstroke, Edwards notched a 1:04.68 to clinch the victory while Yoo won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.80. Matia continued his winning ways with a 1:00.70 in the 100-yard breaststroke.Â
Conquering the 500-yard freestyle, Lotter finished in 5:43.80 while Martin Gomez touched the wall in 5:05.94 for the Yeomen. Winning the 50-yard butterfly, Powers delivered a winning time of 23.56.Â
In the second round of the 1-meter dive, Huettig and Lagasse swept the competition with scores of 130.85 and 177.87, respectively. Returning to the pool for another pair of victories, Whitfield dominated with a 1:05.95 in the 100-yard individual medley relay, while Powers won on the men's side with a 54.16.
Closing out the evening with some winning relays, the team of Yoo, Edwards, Lotter, and Whitfield won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:47.06 to pave the way for Moll, Black, Kye Marrero, and Saïd to secure the victory in 1:29.60.Â
"We had a solid first meet back to start the back half of our season," Head Coach Alex de la Peña adds. "The team has been putting in great work so far during the winter term, and we are going through back-to-back meets this weekend and next to simulate what they will experience at NCAC's in about a month!"
The Crimson and Gold will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, January 17, when they face Malone and Gannon for a double dual meet. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
