Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team kicked off their season on Bailey Field against Calvin on Saturday afternoon. Despite an incredible effort from the Crimson and Gold on both sides of the ball, the Calvin Knights came out on top to spoil the home opener.
Senior
Drew Nye earned the start at quarterback, throwing for 227 yards and one touchdown.
NuNu Samuels led the Crimson and Gold in both rushing and receiving, accounting for 74 yards of offense.
On the defensive side of the ball, the three-headed beast of
Kingston Askerneese,
James Chikwe, and
Hunter Green caused havoc for the Knights. The trio combined for 32 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss that amounted to 14 yards. Askerneese recorded a team-high six solo tackles, while Green notched the team first sack of the season. Newcomers
Ramzey Lewis,
Jayden Eaton, and
Peyton Rough also contributed to the efforts with another 2.5 tackles for loss.
While the veterans made their presence known, first-year
JJ Racz stood out in his career debut, scoring Oberlin's lone touchdown in the second quarter. Starting at their own 22-yard line, Nye's pass to Samuels gave the Yeomen a first down at the 39-yard line. Samuels made the ensuing catch to march the team another seven yards before
Jacob Day drew a pass interference penalty to the ball on Calvin's 39-yard line.
CJ Cooper II kept the momentum rolling with a 22-yard catch to put Oberlin in the red zone. After an incompletion on the first pass attempt, Nye connected with Racz on the second down where the rookie ran 15 yards into the end zone.
Although making the trip to the red zone again later in the second quarter, Oberlin ended the game without another score, falling 88-6 to Calvin.
The Yeomen return to the gridiron for their next game when they load the buses for a trip to Hiram on Saturday, September 13. Oberlin kicks off against the Terriers at 6 p.m.
