Vliet Scores Two Touchdowns in Road Test Against Hiram

Hiram, Ohio – In their first road game of the year, the Oberlin College football team travelled to Hiram for an evening kickoff on Saturday. The wide-receiving duo of JJ Racz and Massimo Vliet shined in the game, combining for three touchdowns and over 150 yards. Despite the standout performances, the Crimson and Gold dropped road-game-number-one against their old conference foe.

Drew Nye earned the start at quarterback, leading Oberlin with 191 pass yards and a trio of touchdowns. A rookie leading the receiving corps, Jacz went 91 yards on 81 receptions, with his longest at 32 yards. Additionally, Cameron Lytle went 3-for-3 in points after touchdowns.

Defensively, the All-Conference linebacker, Hunter Green led the team with nine tackles and two quarterback hits. Alongside the junior, first-year Peyton Rough brought down eight tackles, including five solos.

Setting up at their own 43-yard line, the Yeomen scored their first touchdown on their second drive of the game. Dropping back, Nye made a quick pass to Racz on his left, who weaved his way through the Terriers for a 32-yard pickup. Adding another nine yards on the next play, Racz continued to eviscerate Hiram's defense. Fourth and one, at the Hiram 1-yard line, Nye connected with Racz in the end zone to put the Yeomen on the board.

Oberlin scored again at the end of the third quarter, after a 39-yard trek downfield put Vliet on the right end of a touchdown pass. CJ Cooper II got the drive started for the Crimson and Gold, followed by Vliet and Racz with back-to-back catches. Making their way to the 2-yard line, Nye looked to the right where he found Vliet for the score. A good PAT by Lytle gave Oberlin momentum to carry into the final quarter of action.

Getting the ball with 8:30 remaining, Vliet and Connor Steele led the drive from Oberlin's 41-yard line. Facing second and five, Vliet caught a deep ball from Nye to waltz into the endzone, scoring his second TD of the night.

The Yeomen stayed hot through the final minutes, but ultimately lost the 58-21 matchup. Oberlin opens North Coast action next week, Saturday, September 20, when they head to the newest team on the coast, John Carroll. The Yeomen and the Blue Streaks kickoff at 1 p.m.
