Crimson and Gold Topped by Heidelberg

Tiffin, Ohio - Despite securing the opening set of the night, the Oberlin College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Heidelberg on the road. With the loss, the Crimson and Gold move to 2-13 on the year.

First-year Mara Geiger paced the Oberlin attack registering 14 kills and 14 digs. Senior Jillian Jendsen and sophomore Genna Gauthier split setting responsibilities, totaling 18 and 11 assists, respectively. Five Yeowomen recorded double-digit digs led by senior libero Iris Archibald with 24 digs followed by Jendsen with 17, Geiger (14), first-year Brylie Peters (14), and senior Josie Macdonald (13).

Trailing 10-9 to open the match, the Crimson and Gold produced a five-point surge off of a trio of kills from Macdonald and a kill and ace from Geiger to claim a 14-10 advantage. Holding a 16-13 edge over Heidelberg, Oberlin delivered six of the next seven points to extend their lead 22-14. Finishing the set with a team hitting percentage of .281, the Crimson and Gold soared past the Student Princes 25-16.

Heidelberg jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage in the second frame and never looked back. Ahead 10-5, the Student Princes notched seven unanswered points to increase the margin to 17-5. Hitting their best offense of the night, Heidelberg faced little resistance from Oberlin to claim the second set and even the match.

Behind 13-9 in the third session, the Crimson and Gold posted a four-point rally to close the gap and tie the Student Princes 13-13. Heidelberg followed with three points to pull ahead but were immediately matched by Oberlin with a kill from Peters and Macdonald and a bad Student Prince set. Tied again at 17-17, Heidelberg recorded an eight-point run to clinch the set 25-17.

Holding a narrow 14-12 in the fourth stanza, the Student Princes delivered a five-point rally to broaden their edge to 19-12. The Crimson and Gold responded with three points to reduce their deficit but Heidelberg continued to chip away. Despite their final five points coming from kills, Oberlin fell short in the final set conceding 3-1 to the hosts.

The Crimson and Gold will travel to North Coast opponent Wooster on Friday, October 3. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
