Wooster, Ohio – Hitting the road to continue their North Coast Athletic Conference season, the Oberlin College volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 27-25) to the Fighting Scots.
The three-headed beast of
Mara Geiger (15),
Brylie Peters (14), and
Josie Macdonald (13) led the attack for the Crimson and Gold, accounting for 42 of the team's 52 kills. Peters notched a block solo, followed by
Genna Gauthier and
Evelyn Welton who split a block in the third set. Completing an impressive sweep on offense, Peters also tallied a pair of aces alongside Macdonald with two of her own.
On defense, digs came evenly across the Yeowomen, led by
Iris Archibald with 17. Peters followed with 14, with
Jillian Jendsen (12) and Macdonald (11) coming close behind.
Jumping out early in the first set, Oberlin enjoyed a 5-2 lead to start the match. The Fighting Scots rallied to tie the game at 10-10, before taking their first lead in the final stretch of the set. At 21-21, Wooster grabbed the next five points to clinch the first set.
Flipping the script in the second frame, Oberlin played toe-to-toe with the home team until they scored five straight to take a 19-16 lead. With the slight advantage, Jendsen passed to Macdonald for the set-winning kill.
Tied at 1-1, Oberlin battled from behind to take a 12-11 lead in the third set. A 6-0 run by the Fighting Scots followed, as Oberlin faced an uphill challenge to get back in the set. Oberlin chipped away at the lead, claiming the next seven of eight points. Capped by a Gauthier-Welton block, the Crimson ad Gold reclaimed a 20-19 lead. Coming down from the rally, Wooster took full advantage of a pair of attacking errors to gab the third set.
Starting a must-win set, the Yeowomen earned their first four points off Wooster's error. Finally, Macdonald and Welton made kills to stay within striking distance. Oberlin continued to run the gamut against the Fighting Scots before holding a 21-15 late in the set. Wooster took a timeout to reset their game plan and came out firing to come back within four. The momentum continued to roll, and it was little much Oberlin could do to hold off the home team. The Fighting Scots completed the comeback to win the set and clinch the match.
Oberlin rests for the weekend and will return to the court on Wednesday, October 8 when they host La Roche for a non-conference matchup. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
