Oberlin, Ohio - Opening North Coast action at home, the Oberlin College volleyball team fell short to visiting DePauw 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson and Gold shift to 2-12 overall and 0-1 in league action on the year.
The first-year duo of Mara Geiger and Brylie Peters led the Oberlin attack by registering a match-high ten kills apiece, with Geiger hitting .292. Senior Jillian Jendsen recorded 17 assists while sophomore setter Genna Gauthier posted 11. Supporting the Crimson and Gold backline, senior libero Iris Archibald tallied 13 digs while classmate Josie Macdonald added 11, and Jendsen finished with ten.Â
Tied at 5-5 in the first set, DePauw notched a four-point run to increase their advantage to 9-5. Gauthier sent a pass to Geiger, whose forceful swing was left unanswered to disrupt the Tigers' momentum. Holding a narrow edge at 10-8, DePauw produced an eight-point surge to extend their lead to 18-8. Trailing 20-9, the Yeowomen delivered a four-point rally capped off by an ace from Archibald to reduce the margin to 20-13. Capitalizing on their significant edge, a final five-point push from the Tigers clinched the first set 25-13.Â
The Crimson and Gold opened the second frame with an aggressive offense, recording four of their five points off of a pair of kills from Peters, a kill from sophomore Lucy Goebel, and an ace from Geiger. Trailing 5-3, DePauw recorded a six-point run to claim a 9-5 advantage. Behind 14-9, Oberlin produced a strong attack with eight of their next nine points coming from kills, but short DePauw rallies finished the second set in the Tigers' favor 25-17.Â
Oberlin held a narrow 6-4 lead to open the third session with a trio of kills from Macdonald as well as a kill from Geiger and Peters. DePauw switched gears, collecting ten of the next 11 points to pull ahead 14-7. Short Crimson and Gold bursts kept Oberlin in the match, but the Tigers finished the set 25-16 to secure the sweep.
The Crimson and Gold will resume play on Tuesday, September 30, when they face Heidelberg on the road. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
