Crimson and Gold Blanked by Case Western Reserve

Cleveland, Ohio - Traveling downtown for a midweek matchup, the Oberlin College volleyball team fell to Case Western Reserve 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-17) on Wednesday evening. The Crimson and Gold shift to 2-8 on the year.

First-year Mara Geiger produced a match-high 14 kills while senior Josie Macdonald delivered 11, finishing the night hitting .310. Senior Jillian Jendsen notched 21 assists while sophomore Genna Gauthier posted ten. Leading the backline, senior Iris Archibald tallied 16 digs.

Opening the match with an ace from Jendsen, Oberlin found a strong offensive rhythm with seven kills and two aces to claim a narrow 9-7 lead. The Spartans responded with a five-point run to pull ahead of the Yeowomen 12-9. The Crimson and Gold followed with a kill from first-year Brylie Peters and a pair of kills from Macdonald to tie Case Western Reserve. Both teams continued to exchange the lead until the Spartans finished the set 25-22.

Trailing 6-4 in the second frame, CWRU registered a seven-point surge to overtake Oberlin 11-6. The Crimson and Gold struggled to find their rhythm as consistent Spartan rallies finished the set with a significant 25-12 edge.

Behind 11-6 in the third session, back-to-back kills from Geiger aimed to resurrect a dominant offensive pressure. Case Western Reserve continued to extend their lead with their aggressive attack, holding a 20-13 advantage. Kills from Macdonald, Evelyn Welton, and Geiger reduced the deficit to 20-16, but the Spartans recorded five of the six next points to secure the sweep.

The Crimson and Gold will travel to Pennsylvania to compete in the Messiah Invitational on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20. Oberlin will open play against RV Gettysburg on Friday at 5 p.m. and then return to the court on Saturday when they face Messiah at 11 a.m. and SUNY Cortland at 3 p.m.
