Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – Taking on their first nationally-recognized team of the year, the Oberlin College traveled east to compete against Gettysburg (RV). Truly a fight to the end, Oberlin lost the three-setter, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-14), and drop to 2-9 on the season.
Rookie duo
Brylie Peters and
Mara Geiger combined 22 of the team's 27 kills, with Peters chipping in another three block assists.
Genna Gauthier and
Jillian Jendsen split assists, adding 13 and 11, respectively. Rounding out the offense,
Josie Macdonald led the team with a pair of aces, while
Evelyn Welton and Jendsen added one apiece. Defensively,
Iris Archibald and Peters pulled out 13 digs each.
Grabbing the first point of the match, Peters snagged a kill from Jendsen's set. Gettysburg bounced back with a run of four points to maintain a slight lead over the Crimson and Gold. Oberlin tied it up at 11-11 after Geiger scored and Jendsen served an ace. Back and forth, Oberlin eventually found themselves down 21-15.
In an incredible effort by the squad, Oberlin rallied for a five-point run to come back within one of the Bullets. The tight set remained close over the final points until Gettysburg clinched the frame, 25-22.
Carrying momentum over from the first, the Bullets took an early lead before extending their advantage to 12-7. Not discouraged Geiger led a rally to grab a pair of points to stay within striking distance. Falling back 20-12, Oberlin strung together a slew of points to bring the set back within five. The Yeowomen added another two points before Gettysburg grabbed the second set, 25-18.
The depth of the Bullets played on display in the third set, as the team jumped to a quick 12-3 lead. Oberlin responded with a 6-1 run, capped by a Gauthier to Geiger kill to settle the score at 13-9. The momentum swayed to the side of Gettysburg thereafter, with Oberlin dropping the final set 25-14.
Oberlin returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, September 20 for a pair of games. First, the Yeowomen take on Messiah at 11 a.m., followed by a match against SUNY Cortland at 3 p.m.
