Yeomen Strike First in Shults Night Cap

Oberlin, Ohio – After an early goal to get the game going, the Oberlin College men's soccer team struggled to keep their momentum as they dropped the night match to Allegheny on Wednesday. The 3-1 was highlighted by a score from Michael Dolton, as the Yeomen look to reset ahead of the weekend.

Dolton put the Crimson and Gold on the board first after a breakaway pass met the foot of Kelan Fay. The sophomore forward settled his options, sending a through ball to Louis Gandelheid just outside the box. Gandelheid popped the ball over the defense and ahead to Walter Gomez-Torres. Battling for the ball just inside the boundary line, Gomez-Torres connected with Dolton across the goal line, who tapped the ball in for the goal.

Up 1-0, the Yeomen maintained their pressure on the Gators' defense through much of the next 20 minutes. However, in the 33', Allegheny broke ahead of the Crimson and Gold backline and chopped one past Lukas Verling to tie the match.

Moving into the second half of the game, the Gators came out with renewed energy and ripped off four shots at cage. Verling stood tall to make the first three saves, but the Gators' Nick Magee completed the onslaught with the go-ahead goal for Allegheny.

The Gators controlled the time of possession and came up with another goal over the next ten minutes. Down 3-1, Oberlin saw their best scoring opportunity come when Leo Pelizzari-Astle crossed the ball from the near corner to Graham Field. Just outside the box, Field sent the ball across his body toward the close corner of cage. Allegheny's keeper was forced to make a diving save to keep the Yeomen at bay. Unable to connect again,  Oberlin ultimately fell 3-1 at the final whistle.

Oberlin remains home for their next match on Saturday, September 20 when they host Kalamazoo. The second of two matches on Shults Field that day, the Yeomen are set to kickoff at 3 p.m.
