Oberlin, Ohio - Highlighted by a goal from
Michael Dolton, the Oberlin College men's soccer team tied visiting Kalamazoo 1-1 on Saturday afternoon. With the draw, the Yeomen shift to 1-6-1 on the year.
Appearing between the pipes for all 90 minutes, sophomore Lukas Verling produced four saves. Oberlin held a 12-7 advantage in shots, recording six on goal.
Scoring early in the game, Kalamazoo's Lucas Ruiz slipped a shot past Verling's outstretched arms to get on the board at 3:54. Bringing the ball onto their offensive end, first-year Brendan Tan sent a long shot attempting to even the match but was unable to convert his effort into a goal.
Securing a freekick ten yards beyond the penalty box, Kalamazoo drilled a shot toward the top right corner of the goal. Punching it away from the net, Verling delivered the impressive save to keep the Hornets out of the cage.
Bringing the ball from their defensive end, the collaboration of the Crimson and Gold midfield quickly transitioned the action to the Oberlin attacking zone. Junior Leo Pelizzari-Astle sent a long pass from centerfield to senior Graham Field, directing the ball to rookie Orlando Popkin. Met by two Kalamazoo defenders, Popkin passed the ball back to Field. Sending the ball past the Hornets' keeper, Dolton slid into the ball to score the equalizer for the Yeomen at 39'.
Ten minutes into the second half, Kalamazoo controlled the ball to their offensive zone. The Oberlin backline of Hudson Gazdak and Pelizzari-Astle fought to keep the Hornets away from the net. Slipping past the Crimson and Gold defense, Kalamazoo sent a shot within the goalbox, but stood no contest for Verling's quick reaction.
The Yeomen's best scoring opportunity came from a pair of shots from junior Jack Kaplan with just over ten minutes remaining in the match. Making two diving saves, the Hornets' goalkeeper kept Oberlin out of the cage. Unable to score a second goal, the Crimson and Gold finished the game with a 1-1 tie.
The Yeomen will return to Shults on Thursday, September 25, when they host Baldwin Wallace. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
