Oberlin, Ohio – Taking on their historic rival, the Oberlin College field hockey team hosted Kenyon on Tuesday night. Battling for every possession, the Yeowomen came up short, 1-0 against the Owls. Oberlin moves to 3-2 on the season with the loss.
Janny McCormick earned 60 minutes in cage, where she made five saves between the pipes. Alongside her were
Elly Scheer and
Shelby Roth, who combined for a trio of defensive saves. The Crimson and Gold backline made an additional four blocks in the complete team effort.
Scheer and Roth led the offense as well with three and two shots, respectively.
Lucia Grant got in on the shooting action as well, recording a shot early in the first period.
Oberlin came out hot with a slew of shots in the first ten minutes, but the fiery offense cooled off after Kenyon reset between periods. Capitalizing on their new game plan, the Owls played it perfectly to score on Oberlin.
Up 1-0 to start the second half, the Owls continued their momentum and dominated the time of possession. Oberlin finally regained their footing in the 40', when the offense earned a penalty corner. A pass up the arch from Scheer to Roth led to a fantastic shot that nearly crossed the goal line. A defensive save by Kenyon kept Oberlin off the board and the Owls on top.
Over the final frame, the Crimson and Gold saw the momentum of the Owls take off, as they struggled to maintain possession. Despite a final push by the Obies to score the equalizer at the end, Kenyon held on to their lead for the North Coast win.
"Tonight was a tough result, but I couldn't be prouder of the heart and determination this team showed. They've put in the work every single day, and it showed on the field." Head Coach
Jess West continues, "We executed key elements we've been focusing on in practice, and while the scoreboard didn't go our way, the growth is undeniable. We're hungry to get back on the field and build on this as we prepare for Saturday."
The squad takes a break before returning to the turf on Saturday, September 20 when they head to Wooster. The NCAC matchup is set for 11 a.m.
