Oberlin, Ohio – Hosting Leukemia Awareness Night in honor of sophomore
Averi Williams, the Oberlin College women's soccer team played their hearts out for a 3-1 victory on Muskingum on Wednesday night. First-year
Molly Button scored five points in the match as the Yeowomen grab their first win of the season.
The rookie center midfielder, Button, snagged the first goal of the match after outrunning her defense and winning the one-on-one against the keeper. Sending the ball to the upper cheddar, the first-year put the Yeowomen on the board at the 5:53 mark.
Keeping the momentum rolling, Button got in on the scoring action again when she brought the ball down the far side of the field in the box. Threading it past three Muskies, Button connected with
Meena Lee, who tapped it straight into the back of the net.
Muskingum responded with a goal of their own just minutes before halftime to spoil
Alison Grant's shutout half. Coming out of the break, Oberlin continued to control possession, but the Muskies battled to stay within striking distance.
Nearing the end of the match, Button struck again after receiving the ball from Lee just outside the goalie box. Driving past a trio of defenders, Button launched the ball into the far-left corner of cage to all but clinch victory for Oberlin in the 82'. The Crimson and Gold held on for the final minutes of the game to notch their first win on Shults Field.
"This was a very exciting game for us, and to see Molly have a breakthrough match really sets the tone moving forward." Head Coach
Taylor Houck continues, "More importantly, the team epitomized the spirit, resiliency, and tenacity that Averi brings to us every day. This win means more knowing that we were playing for her; I'm so proud that we can clinch our first victory on the same day we're celebrating her."
The squad hits the road for their next match against Olivet on Saturday, September 13. The MIAA matchup is set to begin at 1 p.m.
