Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's tennis team are off to a hot start in North Coast Athletic Conference play. After beating Ohio Wesleyan yesterday, the Yeowomen took down Wittenberg University, 6–1.
As Wittenberg could only field five players, Oberlin started doubles play needing to win just one of two doubles matches. Oberlin's No.2 duo, second-years
Rachel Allen and
Freya Rahm, quickly took care of business to seal the doubles point in a 6–1 victory over Marin Summers and Celeste Hastings. In a much more closely contested match, fourth-year
Anna Pastore and first-year
Hannah Soong eked out a 7–5 win over Caroline Sproule and Sidney Purks in the No.1 doubles match.
After falling in doubles, Sproule earned Wittenberg's sole point of the day in a 6–4, 6–1 win in the No.1 singles match over Pastore.
Allen, Oberlin's No.2, gutted out a tight first set before pulling away for a 6–3, 6–2 win over Purks.
Oberlin's No.3 through No.5 players dropped only three games combined across six sets and each scored 6–0, 6–1 wins. In the No.3 slot, Rahm dispatched Summers, while first-year
Scarlett Kingston took down Wittenberg's No.4 Hastings and first-year
Eva Lopez, Oberlin's No.5, defeated Elisabeth Josellis.
With the win, the Yeowomen move to 6–6 on the year and 2–0 in NCAC play. The team will be back on court when they host The College of Wooster at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
