Yeomen Sweep Wittenberg

By James Foster '26

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's tennis team opened North Coast Athletic Conference play with a clinical sweep of Wittenberg University.

Wittenberg only had five players on their team, so only two doubles matches were played and Oberlin needed just one win to secure the doubles point. In the end, the early advantage wasn't needed, as the Yeoman dropped just one game across both matches played. Oberlin's No. 1 team, third-year Shawn Lisann and first-year Brady Huggett, rolled past Ethan Libby and Jacob Bennett, 6–1, while second-year Zain Makada and first-year Enrique Margain demolished Wittenberg's No. 2 duo, Justin Hardie and Benjamin Glassman, 6–0. Despite the one game difference, the two matches finished simultaneously.

Singles play was equally straightforward for the Yeomen. In his first match as Oberlin's No. 1, Makada earned a hard fought win over Libby. Makada broke the big-serving Tiger three times for a 7–5, 6–4 win.

"I'm really proud of the team's efforts today," Makada said. "Now we're feeling ready for our next match."

Margain grabbed his quickest win this year with a 6–1, 6–0 win over Hardie, the Tigers' No. 2.

Brose was surgical in his 6–1, 6–0 win in the No. 3 slot over Bennett, in which the Yeoman won all deuce points played.

Oliver Knijnenburg carried over his success from the day before with a 6–3, 6–0 victory, in which the Yeoman won the last eight games of the match against Glassman, the Tigers' No. 4.

Benjamin Tichauer wrapped up the Yeomen's big day by winning the last eleven games of his No. 5 singles match against Andrew Garofoli for a 6–4, 6–0 win. Wittenberg forfeited the No. 6 singles match due to their lack of players.
