Delaware, Ohio - In a high-scoring affair between the two conference opponents, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team fell to Ohio Wesleyan (RV) 19-12 on Saturday afternoon. The loss brings the group to a 3-3 record in NCAC play while maintaining a 9-4 record overall.
On offense for Oberlin, juniors
Solomon Brennan and
Jacob Starcke paced the unit with four points apiece, while sophomore
Asher Friedman posted two points of his own on a goal and an assist. Rounding out the scoring, sophomore
Christian Tacogue and first-year
Cooper Zancosky also chipped in with two goals each.
Defensively, the Yeomen were led by first-years
Chris Totonis and
Joe Chai, with Totonis corralling four ground balls and Chai scooping up three in addition to a caused turnover.
Colin Taylor and
Jake Fields also added a combined four ground balls, with six other defenders forcing spills of their own. At the faceoff, Sardinia held his own against talented specialist Noah Citek for the Bishops, winning 18/29 draws, corralling 8 ground balls along the way.
With both teams letting it fly early, the first quarter was a back-and-forth, high-scoring affair, with Zancosky opening the scoring for Oberlin before Starcke and Brennan each found the back of the net, keeping the Crimson and Gold within one after the Bishops posted four goals of their own in the opening frame.
Ohio Wesleyan showcased their fast-paced style of offense in the second, however, ripping off three goals in the first three minutes before Friedman snuck one past the Bishops' keeper to bring Oberlin back within three. The Bishops immediately responded, though, going on another three-run before the Crimson and Gold ended the half with two goals to enter the half trailing by four.
Oberlin opened the second half on a high note, as Fields scooped up the ball off the opening draw and found Starcke, who fired it into the top corner for a much-needed "juice goal" for the Crimson and Gold. Brennan posted yet another of his own a few moments later, unfortunately, followed by a five-goal run by the Bishops, giving them a seven-goal lead that they maintained for the remainder of the game.
"It was a tough one today...not the result we hoped for. We certainly had some good moments on both sides of the ball, but [Ohio Wesleyan's] transition play and man-up offense hurt us in the end. Our focus turns to Hiram next Wednesday as we look to end the season strong," said captain
Jacob Starcke.
The Yeomen return to action on Bailey next Wednesday against Hiram, with the opening faceoff set for 4:00 p.m.
