Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Crimson and Gold Cruise Past Terriers

By Gavin Girard '25

Oberlin, Ohio - On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon on Bailey field, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team dominated visiting Hiram College in a game that saw the Yeomen score 28 goals via 15 different goalscorers. The statement win brings the group to 10-4 on the year with a 4-3 record in NCAC play.

Hounding the Hiram goaltender with over 73 shots, the Oberlin offense was firing across the board, led by junior Jacob Starcke and first-year Nicholas Cuda, both of whom found the net four times while tallying lone assists to give them each five points apiece. Oberlin's offensive depth shined, as evidenced by the Yeomen's twelve additional goalscorers to go along with Starcke and Cuda, including Sam Ryu, Andrew Rosa, and Jack Duffy, with the trio combining for an impressive seven goals and five assists. Stalemates on the Crimson and Gold roster, senior Aidan Johnston and sophomore Hwaejin Chung also got in on the action, with both recording two points of their own.

On the defensive end, the Yeomen were able to rotate a variety of talent as the game progressed, highlighted by Gavin Girard, as the senior defenseman led the group with three ground balls along with his first goal of the season and first of his career. Backliners Colin Taylor and Cooper Rand made the most of their minutes, combining for five ground balls and four caused turnovers, with defensive midfielders Justin Bader and Edward Totry joining the party with two ground balls apiece as well.

Oberlin's specialists also shined against the Terriers, headlined by senior netminder Joe Barocas, who recorded five saves while adding five scoops and two spills to his impressive resume. The first-year faceoff tandem of Evan Sardina and Thinley Edwards were lights out at the X, going a combined 32/35 while combining for 23 ground balls.

Taking some time to settle into the conference clash, it wasn't until the 9th minute of the first quarter that Starcke unleashed a rocket to the top of the net to get Oberlin on the board. After breaking the ice, however, the Yeomen would make a statement in the remainder of the first, scoring nine more to give the group a 10-1 lead going into the second frame.

The Crimson and Gold would keep it rolling in the second frame, ripping off another nine goals while holding the Hiram offense scoreless to carry a 19-1 lead into halftime. Hiram would strike first blood in the third off an unfortunate bouncer that snuck past Barocas, but Oberlin would quickly respond courtesy of goals from Duffy, Cuda, and Girard to regain control for Oberlin. With both teams somewhat settling down in the fourth, Oberlin would net three, courtesy of Duffy, first-year Drew Morrison, and Chung, while Hiram tickled the twine once off of a nice finish from attackman Ethan Mayer. Despite the late goal, the Oberlin defense held tough all day while the balanced scoring on offense dominated, giving the Crimson and Gold a dominant conference victory.

Oberlin closes out their regular season this Saturday at Bailey Field as they host DePauw at 1:00. The Yeomen will look to make a statement in honor of their seniors for their Senior Day game.
