Crawfordsville, Indiana - By virtue of eight different goal scorers, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team defeated Wabash 13-8 on Saturday afternoon. The win brings the squad to 9-3 on the season while garnering their third conference win to bring them to 3-2 in NCAC play.
Leading the pack on offense was standout first-year attackman
Nicholas Cuda, recording four points on three goals and an assist while also scooping up four ground balls. Fellow first-year
Cooper Zancosky deposited three goals of his own, while six other Yeomen recorded at least a goal.
"After a sluggish start, we were able to move the ball with good pace around the defense, keeping the ball hot which allowed us to find the back of the net," Cuda said. "Shoutout to the defense for holding it down and giving us time to get things going."
On the defensive end,
Jonas Taylor-Lillquist continued his streak of impressive performances, scooping up four ground balls while causing two turnovers.
Cooper Rand caused havoc in the middle of the field, forcing two turnovers of his own, with long-stick midfielders
Jake Fields and
Egan Funke each corralling two scoops and a spill.
At the face-off,
Evan Sardina continued his hot streak in conference play, winning twenty-one of the twenty-four contests, scooping up seventeen ground balls along the way.
Getting off to a slow start, the Crimson and Gold found themselves in a 2-0 deficit early in the first period courtesy of goals by Christian Dyebock and Quinn Fitzgerald for Wabash. Cuda soon got the squad on the board, however, firing a beauty past the keeper for his 12
th goal of the season. The two squads kept the scoring hot for the remainder of the period, entering the second quarter in a 3-3 draw.
The Yeomen offense fired early and often in the second quarter, with goals from Zancosky,
Christian Tacogue, and
Jacob Starcke to give the group a 6-3 lead halfway through the frame. By that point, the Oberlin defense had found their footing, holding the Little Giants to just one goal that snuck past Barocas in the last minute of the frame.
Coming out of the half, Wabash struck quickly, netting two goals to level the contest at six apiece. The remainder of the match saw the Crimson and Gold take control, however, as the Yeomen found the net seven more times while only letting in two, giving the squad a 13-8 victory over their conference foe.
"I'm really proud of how we competed after that tough loss against Kenyon on Wednesday night," said Taylor-Lillquist. "It was a quick, tough turnaround, but we found a way to play at our pace and get the victory. It may not have been pretty, but we got the win and can now turn our focus to Ohio Wesleyan next weekend."
Next for the Yeomen comes a conference clash against Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio, next Saturday, April 19th, at 1:00 p.m.
