Sardina Notches Pair of Program Records in Victory Over Trine

Angola, Indiana – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team made a statement with a 12-9 victory over Trine on Wednesday night. The win moves the Yeomen to 6-1 on the season ahead of their conference opener against 18th-ranked Denison.

Leading the team, second-year transfer Evan Sardina won 23-24 faceoffs, and collected 21 groundballs in the game. Not only does he tie the single-game faceoff record (23), Sardina also takes sole ownership of the single-game ground ball record (21), previously set by all-time great, Kinori Ronsow (20) in 2017.

Solomon Brennan led the team in scoring with four goals and an assist. Also notching a multi-goal game, Jacob Starcke put three away while Nicholas Cuda added two more. From behind cage, Cooper Zancosky dished out a pair of assists in addition to his own goal.

In cage, Jake Pillsbury made six saves to go along with one ground ball. Cooper Rand backed his goalie with a career-high seven ground balls, while Joe Chai did his part with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Oberlin came off the warmup hot, scoring three goals right away to get on the board. Trine responded towards the end of the quarter, tying the game at 3-3. Brennan connect with Cuda to start the third quarter, but the Titans scored in the ensuing possession. Retaking the lead at 5-4, Christian Tacogue found Jack Duffy inside the box to strike again for the Yeomen. Trine stayed pace with Oberlin, to tie the game at 7-7 just seconds before the halftime break.

The Titans took their first lead of the game in the opening seconds of the third quarter, scoring on a fast break off the faceoff. Cuda from Chai answered on Oberlin's next possession, but the Titans continued to build momentum in the second half. Down 8-7, Oberlin took full advantage of an unforced turnover by the home team, notching the equalizer at the 2:23 mark. At the buzzer, Brennan gave the Yeomen a boost with a sharp shot to take a 9-8 lead.

After 45 minutes of intense, back-and-forth action, the Yeomen picked up speed and extended their lead to three with 6:36 remaining. The Titans closed the gap to two, but the Crimson and Gold had too much momentum to be stopped and secured the gritty victory.

The Yeomen take a much-needed rest before they begin conference play on Sunday, March 23. Heading down to Granville, Ohio, Oberlin opens NCAC action against the Denison Big Red, who currently rank 18 in the country.
