Crimson and Gold Shine on Senior Day

Oberlin, Ohio – After celebrating their seven seniors prior to kickoff, the Oberlin College football team took on No. 23 Wabash on Saturday afternoon. Joey Draper, Jacob Epps, Hunter Green, Jake Hughes, Michael Mathis, Drew Nye, and Connor Steele were all honored during the pregame ceremony.

After leading Oberlin for four years, Nye led for one last time on Bailey Field. He threw 243 yards, passing for a touchdown, and running for a touchdown. His top target was rookie Miguel Garcia Garcia who caught 12 passes and accounted for 117 yards and a touchdown. JJ Racz stretched five catches for 71 yards, while Steele brought in four receptions for 36 yards. On the ground Daniel Pressley ran 44 yards to lead the backfield.

On the defense, Ramzey Lewis had a career day with four tackles, a sack, and an interception. The junior also added a tackle for loss that accounted for 14 yards of deficit for the Little Giants. Jayden Eaton led the team in total tackles with six made up of four solos and two assists.

Additionally, Andrew Foley, Ako Taylor II, James Chikwe, and Green chimed in with five tackles each. Zheming Tang rounded out the balanced performance with the sole sack of the game that came in the third quarter.

After a slow start to the game, the Yeomen got their first boost of momentum after Nye connected with Racz for 28 yards and a first down. Unable to convert, the Yeomen were forced to punt. Jackson Garstka lineup for the boot, but a muffed punt turned into an Oberlin recovery on the Wabash one-yard line when Chikwe landed on the ball. Needing just one yard to go, the Little Giants flexed their defensive prowess and held Oberlin off the board.

The Yeomen continued to build momentum, culminating in an explosive fourth quarter where Oberlin outscored Wabash 13-0. Beginning on the first drive at the Wabash 33-yard line, Nye completed a deep pass to Garcia Garcia for the team's first score of the game. Cameron Lytle converted the point after to cap a perfect drive.

At the end of Wabash's next drive, Judah Moenoa blocked a field attempt, and Green scooped the ball up to return it for 23 yards to Oberlin's 38-yard line. Despite coming up empty on the blocked FG, Oberlin's final drive of the game was one of the most electric of the season.

Beginning at Oberlin's 41-yard line, Nye found Racz for a ten-yard catch to move the chains. And four consecutive passes to Garcia Garcia and Steele, the Yeomen marched down to the Wabash 29-yard line.

With just 11 seconds on the clock and 3rd and 8, Nye looked dropped back into the shotgun. With all of his receivers covered, the four-year veteran scrambled outside the pocket, juking his defenders, and sprinting the eight yards into the endzone. Scoring the team's final touchdown in his final play on Bailey Field, Nye finished the game for the Yeomen on a high.

Oberlin ultimately fell to the nationally-ranked Little Giants 42-13 and looks ahead to their final game day with Team 135. The Yeomen and Ohio Wesleyan face off next Saturday, November 15, with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
