Oberlin Breaks Two Pool Records at Hiram

Hiram, Ohio - The Oberlin College swim & dive team started and ended their day on a high note as two relay teams established new facility records at Hiram on Saturday afternoon. 

The men's 200 medley relay opened the meet breaking the Hiram pool record as James Moll, Charles Matia, Leo Powers, and John Polylogidis clocked in a time of 1:49.70 with splits of 28.48, 30.43, 26.20, and 24.59, respectively. This surpasses the previous record of 1:50.95 set by Malone in 2013. 

Wrapping up the day with another record, the women's 200 free relay of Ari Marrero, Soomin Yoo, Maya Edwards, and Nyrobi Whitfield touched the wall in 1:55.81, recording splits of 28.94, 28.85, 29.41, and 28.61, respectively. The Crimson and Gold performance overtakes the 17-year old record set by Wooster in 2008. 

Facing Hiram and Bethany, the Crimson and Gold went four for four as the women's team defeated Hiram 210-31 before claiming a 203-13 victory over Bethany. The men's team produced a 214-60 win over Hiram before securing an impressive 229-4 victory over Bethany.

Following the strong start from the men's 200 medley relay, the women's 200 medley relay of Yasmeen Boulaknadal, Yoo, Kaylee Johnson, and Whitfield delivered a winning time of 2:13.47. The relay team of Edwards, Andie Kinstle, Kendall McKelvey, and Marrero followed close behind in 2:13.86 to claim the runner-up position.

Mark Sferra finished as Oberlin's top performer in the 800 free, clocking in a time of 9:37.78 to finish second while Katherine Noller won the 800 free with a time of 10:15.19. In the 200 free, Miguel Siwady clinched the victory touching the wall in 2:01.58 while Johnson won the women's 200 free in 2:28.46. 

In the 50 back, Moll notched the win, finishing in 28.56, as Whitfield secured a winning time of 33.09. The Crimson and Gold won both 50 breaststroke events as Matia and Kinstle registered victories by posting times of 31.55 and 39.76, respectively. 

Oberlin swept the top spots in the 100 fly as Chahine Saïd touched the wall in 1:01.02 while McKelvey recorded a time of 1:13.08. Winning the 50 free, Polylogidis clocked a 24.86 as Yoo won in 28.57. 

In the 100 free, Moll continued his winning streak, finishing nearly 10 seconds faster than his seed time, producing a final time of 55.25. Marrero claimed the top position in the women's 100 free with a finishing time of 1:04.28. 

Siwady won the 100 back in 1:02.89 while Hailey Hamilton finished as the runner-up in 1:16.32. Powers and Yoo led the 100 breaststroke races, notching winning times of 1:11.38 and 1:21.79, respectively. Saïd and Noller followed, winning both 400 free events with times of 4:26.04 and 5:04.29, respectively. 

Winning the 50 fly, Zach Black touched the wall in 27.70 as Whitfield secured the victory in the 50 fly with a time of 32.55. Moll and Noller won each 200 individual medley relay with winning times of 2:21.24 and 2:45.12, respectively. Leading up to the record-breaking women's 200 free relay, the men's 200 free relay quartet of Saïd, Polylogidis, Powers, and Black finished nearly six seconds ahead of the runner-up with a time of 1:38.51.

The Crimson and Gold swept the diving events as Sebastian Lagasse won the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, registering scores of 170.40 and 165.20, respectively. Elizabeth Huettig posted the top score in the 1-meter with a mark of 129.30. 

Oberlin will resume action with a three-day meet starting on Thursday, November 20, at the Malone Invitational. Each day is set to begin at 9 a.m.
