Canton, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's and women's swim and dive teams launched action on the opening day of the Malone Invitational, going up against four Division II programs.
Registering 336 points, the men's team sits in second after day one, only placing behind Division II Gannon. The women's team produced 244 points to end the first two sessions in fifth, placing as the top Division III program.
Defending his title as the 500-yard freestyle champion, Chahine Saïd secured the top finish in a field of 24. Recording a winning time of 4:38.59, the junior finished over two seconds ahead of the runner-up.
The 200-yard women's free relay of Ari Marrero, Soomin Yoo, Maya Edwards, and Nyrobi Whitfield kicked off the meet, placing fourth out of 24 teams in 1:40.58 and finishing as the top Division III relay team.
The men's 200-yard free relay quartet matched the energy from the women's team, placing fourth overall. Finishing as the top Division III program, Saïd, John Polylogidis, Leo Powers, and James Moll powered to clock in a 1:25.36, which ranks among the top-10 in program history. Following close behind, Miguel Siwady, Kye Marrero, Emerson Rutherford-Parish, and Zach Black placed fifth in 1:26.47.
Cam Mauer continued the Oberlin success in the 500-yard free, touching the wall in 5:33.11 to finish in 13th. The trio of Powers, Moll, and Siwady performed well in the 200-yard IM, clinching the sixth through eighth positions by posting times of 1:55.94, 1:56.52, and 1:57.45, respectively.
In the 50-yard free, A. Marrero and Yoo finished fractions apart, notching 11th and 13th with times of 25.15 and 25.18, respectively. Black finished as the top Yeomen in the men's 50-yard free, recording a 21.53 to place 11th overall. Polylogidis trailed close behind, placing 13th overall in 21.88. Both Black and Polylogidis posted top-10 all-time performances in the 50 free.
In the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Edwards, Yoo, Kendall McKelvey, and A. Marrero recorded a 4:13.98, finishing in eighth place. Competing in the men's 400-yard medley relay, Moll, Charles Matia, Powers, and Saïd finished as the top Division III program with a bronze finish after registering a time of 3:27.67 and landing on the Oberlin top-10 list.
The Crimson and Gold will return to the pool tomorrow, Friday, November 21, for the second day of the Malone Invitational. The preliminary session begins at 10 a.m. with the second session scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
