Oberlin, Ohio - Hosting a midweek matchup in Philips, the Oberlin College men's basketball team fell to Cal Lutheran 57-51 on Wednesday night.
JJ Gray and Matt Andreopoulos paced the Crimson and Gold with nine points and a pair of rebounds apiece. Rob Magner recorded eight points, four rebounds, a block, and a steal, while Sam Kamenko finished the evening with eight points, seven rebounds, three blocks, and a steal.
Milun Micanovic registered double-digits in rebounds, producing 11 boards, six points, and a block in 31 minutes of action. Micanovic and Kamenko both went 2-2 from the free-throw line while Gray hit 3-4.
Cal Lutheran jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first five minutes of action. Andreopoulos disrupted the Regal streak from the elbow to launch offensive action for the Yeomen as Magner followed with a shot from beyond the arc. Securing the defensive rebound, Jackson Reynolds ripped off a layup to close the gap to 8-7. Tied at 10-10, Cal Lutheran pulled away to a 20-13 lead with 8:28 remaining.
Kamenko sent a pass to Andreopoulos as the sophomore drained a three to reduce the margin for Oberlin. Following a Regal tip-in, Augustus Donohue, Zach Smith, and Magner each added two-pointers, leveling the match to 22-22 with 1:25 until time expired. Drawing a foul, Cal Lutheran made the second free-throw attempt, but a layup from Gray with three seconds on the clock clinched the narrow 24-23 lead for Oberlin going into the break.
Both teams kept each other off the board for the first three minutes of the second period until Smith notched the tip-in following a Zach Bronson steal. The Knightsmen responded quickly, controlling the ball to their offensive end, but Kamenko orchestrated a strong defense, blocking the Cal Lutheran layup. Maintaining possession, a Regal layup opened scoring action as they followed with a long-range fastbreak shot to claim a 28-26 edge.
Trailing 50-41, Oberlin recorded five unanswered points to reduce the margin to four. With the Crimson and Gold eager to halt the Knightsmen, Cal Lutheran recorded their remaining seven points from free throws. With 12 seconds remaining in the match, Smith knocked down a triple, hoping to revitalize a Yeomen surge, but running out of time, Oberlin conceded the 57-51 loss.
The Crimson and Gold will travel to The Big Apple on Friday, November 14, to face Medgar Evers in their first road contest of the season. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
