Oberlin Wins 2OT Thriller on Bailey

Oberlin, Ohio – Needing double overtime to decide a winner, the Oberlin College field hockey team hosted Concordia for a thriller at home on Friday night. With her second goal of the year, Lucia Grant gave the Crimson and Gold the instant winner to catapult Oberlin back to .500 on the year.

Concordia controlled the time of possession in the first quarter, notching a pair of shots in the opening period. The Oberlin backline held off a pair of penalty corners, while Janny McCormick made a trio of saves to keep the Falcons off the board.

Still looking for their first meaningful offensive possession, the Yeowomen earned just that with a penalty corner in the third period. Elly Scheer launched the ball to the top of the arch, but the Falcons' defense prevented a Crimson and Gold shot. Another corner, just minutes later, Bella Tilford and Scheer both ripped shots off to begin mounting offensive pressure.

Heading into the final four minutes of regulation, Concordia earned three penalty corners. McCormick and Co. played lockdown defense in the arch to keep the Falcons off the board and force overtime.

The Falcons dominated possession in the first OT, getting back-to-back shots off in the first three minutes. Their best scoring opportunity came at the 63:20 mark, but Scheer stepped in the path of the shot to block it out of bounds.

Heading into a second overtime period, Oberlin struck right away. At 72:01, Tilford knocked a close shot on cage, stopped just short by Concordia. Collecting the ricochet, Kate Maness found rookie classmate Grant to pop the ball over the head of the goalie and into the back of the net. Clinching instant victory, the squad grabbed their fourth win of the season to tie its highest win total since they went 7-11 in 2011.

Finishing the game with four saves, McCormick now sits at 299 career saves. Currently fifth all-time, the senior looks to break the 300-mark in their next outing. The squad's fourth win of the season ties their highest win total since they went 7-11 in 2011.

"As a coaching staff, we are so proud of how the team came out and played relentless field hockey until the very end, with every single player contributing by doing their role for the team." Assistant Coach Emily Harris remarks, "With a conference game on Sunday, this sets the tone and builds momentum to take on Wittenberg as well as the rest of the season."

Making a quick turnaround, Oberlin returns to action on Sunday, October 6, when they host Wittenberg at home. The matchup is set to begin at 1 p.m.
