Oberlin, Ohio –The Oberlin College field hockey team battled hard under a hot Sunday sky at Knowlton Stadium but came up just short, falling 2–1 to visiting Wittenberg in a tight NCAC matchup. The Crimson and Gold move to 4-5 on the year and 1-4 in NCAC action.
Senior goalkeeper
Janny McCormick reached a major milestone in the contest, recording her 300th career save on her very first stop of the afternoon. The veteran keeper finished with four saves, including two in the fourth quarter.
After an early Wittenberg goal in the first quarter,
Shelby Roth brought the Yeowomen even midway through the second with her first goal of the season. The rookie capitalized on an Oberlin penalty corner sequence to make it 1–1 heading into halftime.
The teams traded momentum throughout the second half, with Oberlin's defense, anchored by McCormick and
Elly Scheer, holding strong through a flurry of Tiger corners. Scheer tallied a defensive save midway through the third quarter to keep the teams deadlocked.
Despite the Yeowomen's resilience, Wittenberg broke the deadlock in the 55th minute to take a 2–1 lead. Oberlin continued to press in the closing minutes, with
Bella Tilford and
Paloma Szyfer creating late chances, but the Tigers held on for the win.
Oberlin now turns their focus to the road, traveling to face Washington and Jefferson on Friday, October 10, at 7 p.m.
