Delaware, Ohio – Hitting the road for the final game of the regular season, the Oberlin College men's soccer team took on Ohio Wesleyan, Wednesday night.
Despite the 3-0 loss, keeper
Lukas Verling made eight impressive saves. The backline of
Matthew Taubman and
Alexander Bejarano forced another nine shots off target.
On the attack,
Nathan Thompson led the team with five shots, putting just one on cage.
Michael Dolton shot twice, with just one of his shots being saved by the Battling Bishops' keeper.
Thompson's shot just one minute into the match soared out left but gave the Yeomen some early momentum. Another shot from Thompson just minutes later was followed by a take from
Jesse Rho. With neither able to convert, OWU maintained the deadlock.
At the 31:49 mark, the Battling Bishops broke open the game with the first goal of the match. Shy of ten minutes later, the home team scored again to extend their lead to two ahead of the halftime break.
Ohio Wesleyan's momentum carried over into the second half after back-to-back corner kicks led to a solo goal from Mitchell Cosler.
Down 3-0, the Yeomen's frustrations began to mount after
Walter Gomez-Torres and Taubman earned yellow cards. Oberlin's best chance to score came in the final minutes of the match when Dolton put a cross from a corner kick on frame. OWU's Zach Hertzberg made the save in the center of the cage to keep Oberlin off the board.
With just seconds remaining, Thompson launched a ball to the top left of the net, but again the Battling Bishops matched the attack and secured the shutout.
Oberlin returns home for their final match of the regular season on Saturday, November 1. The squad will celebrate their four seniors prior to the 12 p.m. kickoff.
