Field Hockey Drops Tight North Coast Matchup

Washington, Pennsylvania - The Oberlin College field hockey team fell to North Coast opponent Washington & Jefferson on Friday evening. With the loss, the Crimson and Gold drop to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in league action on the season.

Senior goalkeeper Janny McCormick appeared in the cage for all 60 minutes of regulation, registering four saves.

The Presidents opened scoring action in the 10th minute of play as Lindsey Blount connected with Lily Giering to slip a shot past McCormick. Closing out the first period with a pair of Washington & Jefferson shots, McCormick delivered back-to-back saves to enter the second frame trailing 1-0.

Washington & Jefferson controlled time of possession for much of the second quarter as Oberlin was unable to produce an offensive opportunity. With just over three minutes remaining in the period, the Presidents tallied another goal to double their lead going into the break.

First-year Lucia Grant found an opening in the Washington & Jefferson defense, seizing the opportunity to take a shot. Saved by the Presidents' goalkeeper, Washington & Jefferson quickly controlled the ball to their offensive end. Notching a trio of corners, the Presidents extended their lead to 3-0 following the third corner. Senior Clare Kammeier executed a late shot with less than a second remaining, but was blocked by the Washington & Jefferson backline.

Oberlin opened the final quarter with a dominant offense, recording a trio of shots within a two-minute span. Securing a penalty-shot opportunity, senior Elly Scheer drilled her attempt past the Washington & Jefferson keeper to get the Yeowomen on the board at 49:58.

Maintaining their rhythm, Oberlin capitalized off a corner to claim a second goal. First-year Shelby Roth sent the ball past a Presidents defender to connect with Bella Tilford. Drilling her shot past the keeper to the right of the cage, the junior reduced the Crimson and Gold deficit to one. Unable to find another offensive opportunity, Oberlin fell to the conference rivals 3-2.

The Crimson and Gold will return to action on Saturday, October 18 when they travel to DePauw. The North Coast matchup is scheduled for 12 p.m.
