Dolton Secures Hat Trick in Tight Battle Against Capital

Oberlin, Ohio - Highlighted by another late goal from Michael Dolton, the Oberlin College men's soccer team defeated Capital 3-2 on Wednesday evening. Following the non-conference win, the Yeomen improve to 3-7-1.

Appearing between the pipes for all 90 minutes of the match, sophomore Lukas Verling recorded two saves on the night. Evenly contested through the match, Oberlin and Capital each produced 11 shots.

Starting scoring action early for the Crimson and Gold, Dolton found an opening with first-year Orlando Popkin. Popkin sent the ball back to Dolton as the Ontario native drilled the ball to the top right past the Comets' goalkeeper to get the Yeomen on the board at 2:40.

Scoring the equalizer for Capital, Wassim Metatla dribbled the ball past the Oberlin backline. Passing it to Christian Monzalvo, the Comets sent the ball to the bottom left past Verling to match the Crimson and Gold at 16:54.

A few minutes later, the Comets were awarded a corner. Sending the ball in front of the cage, Cade Wurstner connected with Carter Musgrove, who headed the ball past Verling to double the Capital's lead at 32'. Oberlin was unable to find another offensive opportunity, going into the break down 2-1.

Leveling the match nearly five minutes in the second half, Dolton gained control of the ball, bringing it past a Capital defender. Sending it to the bottom left of the cage, Dolton slipped it past the Comets' keeper to tie the opponents. Senior Louis Gandelheid and sophomore Walter Gomez-Torres followed delivering on-target shots but were unable to convert.

Following a Capital throw-in, Oberlin regained possession of the ball, hoping to find a final scoring opportunity. With 90 seconds remaining on the clock, Gandelheid connected with Dolton, nailing it to the bottom right to register his first career hat trick. Keeping the Comets at bay, the Crimson and Gold clinched the late 3-2 victory.

"Our mentality in the second half was so much better," said Head Coach Blake New. "We came together and worked hard for the win. Mike had a great day and I'm glad he's on our team."

The Yeomen will open North Coast action on the road on Saturday, October 4, when they travel to John Carroll. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
