Greenwood, Indiana – Four members of the Oberlin College football team were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District list, as announced by CSC on Tuesday afternoon.
James Chikwe,
Colten Danel,
Jordan Fishback,
Gavi Genger,
Hunter Green,
Greg Lane Jr.,
Evan Smith-Rooks, and
Connor Steele headlined the 46 NCAC athletes to earn the academic distinction.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic status and either competed in 90% of the team's sets or started in at least 66% of matches while maintaining a 3.50 or higher cumulative grade point average.
Coming off an impressive season that led to All-NCAC honors, Green anchored the Crimson and Gold defense with a team-best 103 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Alongside Green, Genger manned the defensive line with 24 tackles, with five coming from their game at Denison. Protecting the outside, Chikwe made 52 tackles and pulled in a pair of interceptions, including the one that clinched victory for Oberlin in their test against Hiram.
On the offense, Danel and Lane Jr. split responsibilities in the backfield. Danel led the team in net rushing yardage with 281 yards, while Lane Jr. came second with 137. On the receiving end, Steele set the bar with a team-high 345 yards, followed by Smith-Rooks with 258. The duo combined for two touchdowns aided by Steele, who scored a pair as well. Danel also handled punting duties, where he accumulated 2,237 yards to finish second in the conference.
While Genger, Lane Jr., and Smith-Rooks are set to graduate in the spring, the rest of the Yeomen have their sights set on next season, aimed to build upon their recent success.
