Oberlin, Ohio – Snagging a much-needed victory to start 2025, the Oberlin College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Wesleyan at home on Saturday afternoon. Four Yeomen finished in double-figures as they cruised to a 71-62 final. Oberlin improves to 9-4 on the season, and 1-3 in NCAC play.
Leading the offense,
JJ Gray accounted for 15 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Following the second-year,
Andrew Gannon grabbed 13 points, while
Zach Smith finished with 12. The duo combined for seven of the team's 11 three-pointers.
Milun Micanovic notched another balanced performance, grabbing ten points, seven rebounds, and a pair of assists.
Adam Navarre also finished with seven rebounds, setting a new career-high for the junior.
The Crimson and Gold made their presence felt from tip off, scoring eight-straight point to start the game. The Battling Bishops crawled their way back to take a 12-11 lead, but Gannon drilled a triple to reclaim the lead.
The back-and-forth action continued to drive the game, but a shot from long off the hands of Smith began a 10-2 run from Oberlin to close the half.
Up 39-33 to start the second half, Gray extended that lead to eight after capitalizing on a pass from
Yuuki Okubo. Oberlin never conceded their lead through the second half, dominating the boards and holding the visitors to 2-14 from behind the arch. The Yeomen's largest lead (13) came at the 6:02 mark when Gannon tipped in a shot from Navarre.
With momentum on their side, the Crimson and Gold travel to DePauw next weekend, Saturday, January 11 to take on the Tigers in the hopes of securing their second conference victory. Tip off is set for 1 p.m. with women's team playing immediately after.
