Men’s Soccer Soars Past Chatham in First Season Win

OBERLIN, OH – A trio of Yeomen recorded their first points of the season as the Oberlin College men's soccer team rolled past Chatham on Saturday afternoon. The 3-1 victory was highlighted by Walter Gomez-Torres, who scored his first goal in Crimson and Gold. Oberlin moves to 1-3 on the season before hitting the road for the next two matches.

It had been less than three minutes into the second half when the Cougars broke past the Oberlin backline, finding the back of the net and jumping to an early lead. The Yeomen wasted no time in scoring the equalizer, as Augie Smith crossed to the foot of Toby Wells-Zimmerman for the tying score.

Ten minutes later, the Crimson and Gold worked the ball into the far corner on their attacking half. After Anthony Pacewicz's cross was blocked by the Cougars, Gomez-Torres grabbed the ball out of the air to sail it into the back of the net.

Taking a 2-1 lead into the final minutes of action, the Crimson and Gold attack added an insurance goal in the 81'. Pacewicz sent a perfect pass across the goal box to Xander Francoeur, who tapped the ball into cage.

Oberlin continued to pressure the visitors, forcing Chatham to make two more saves in the final 30 seconds. Holding on for the 3-1 win, the Yeomen grab their first victory of the season on Shults Field.

Men's soccer returns to action next on Thursday, September 12 when they take on Allegheny. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
