Meadville, PA - The Oberlin College men's soccer team was searching for its second straight victory but came up short at Allegheny College on Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0.
In a tug-of-war type of contest, the Gators found the game's lone goal in the 62nd minute when Nick Magee finished off a Renen Frank feed.
It was eventually matched throughout the 90-minute affair with the Yeomen finishing with a 16-14 shot advantage but the Gators had a slight 6-5 edge in shots on goal. The two former conference foes also triggered two corner kicks apiece.
Oberlin put plenty of pressure on the Allegheny rearguard, including its first three attempts following the second-half restart but
Xander Francoeur,
Graham Field, and
Nathan Thompson were all denied by Cadan Bennett less than eight minutes into the frame.
After the Gators' goal, the Yeomen continued to press forward in search of the equalizer.
Anthony Pacewicz and
Walter Gomez-Torres each fired off a pair of shots with Pacewicz's attempt with just under 20 minutes to go being saved by Bennett.
However, Oberlin's best chance to score came in the 80th minute when Francoeur stepped up the penalty spot but sailed his offering wide of target. The senior from Cupertino, California, posted a team-high four shots but just one was on frame.
Rookie
Grayson Benson went the distance between the pipes and made five saves.
The Yeomen have a short turnaround as they look to get back on track on Saturday afternoon at Muskingum University. The first touch is set for 3:00 PM.
