Oberlin, Ohio - Matt Hermann's goal with under a minute to go lifted the visiting Grove City College Wolverines to a 2-1 victory over the Oberlin College men's soccer team on Wednesday night at Fred Shults Field.
The Yeomen led 1-0 at the break, but couldn't make it stand up as the Wolverines scored twice in the second half to notch their second win of the year while dealing Oberlin its third loss to open the 2024 campaign.
It appeared that both sides were destined for a draw but a costly Oberlin foul from 35 yards out put the Yeomen in a dangerous situation as the clock ticked down under 60 seconds. Second-year goalie
Vince Fortuna initially thwarted away a long service into the box but the deflection fell to the feet of Aidan Eck, who curled in his rebound attempt into the upper right corner of the goal to send the visitors home happy.
Oberlin controlled the run of play throughout the bulk of the first half and was ultimately rewarded for its effort as senior
Toby Wells-Zimmerman found space on the near side of the box and deposited a feed from classmate
Augie Smith into the net in the 21st minute for Oberlin's first goal of the season. For Wells-Zimmerman the score marked the 10th of his career.
The Yeomen went into the intermission feeling good, but the Wolverines made some adjustments before the restart and applied plenty of attacking pressure on the Oberlin backline throughout the second half. After Noah Gray's initial shot attempt was blocked, Aidan Eck collected the loose ball and pushed one past Fortuna for the equalizer in the 80th minute.
Oberlin fought to go back out in front, firing off four shots over the next four minutes with Wells-Zimmerman striking one into the breadbasket of Teddy Almeter. The Washington, D.C. native would later have another promising attempt blocked by a Grove City defender.
Anthony Pacewicz and
Ian Hererra also triggered shots towards the goal but came up empty to set up the thrilling finish for the Wolverines.
Freshman
Grayson Benson made his first-career start in goal, making four first-half saves before giving way to Fortuna in the second half.
Oberlin finished with a slight 12-11 advantage in shots, but the Wolverines had a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. OC also finished with a 4-2 margin in corner kicks.
The Yeomen will look to notch their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon when Chatham University comes to town for a 1 p.m. clash.
