BEXLEY, OH – After snagging their first win over the weekend, the Oberlin College volleyball team hit the road south to take on the Capital Comets. Although a late push gave the Yeowomen hope, their run was stopped short by the Comets on Wednesday night in a 3-0 (15-25, 16-25, 22-25) loss. Oberlin falls to 1-6 on the season ahead of another road tourney this weekend.
Evelyn Welton,
Cami Sweet, and
Zeynep Kaya each played a balanced role in the attack, recording six kills apiece. Splitting setting duties,
Jillian Jendsen (11) and
Genna Gauthier (10) combined for 21 assists.
Iris Archibald pulled out 12 digs on the defense on top of three assists.
Natalie Dufour bolstered the Crimson and Gold defense with two solo blocks at the net.
After solid back-and-forth action, the Comets pulled away from the Yeowomen at 11-5. Kills from
Josie Macdonald and Sweet brought Oberlin back within four, but Capital maintained their pace to outrun Oberlin 25-15.
Another slow start for the Crimson and Gold found themselves down 8-1 in the early points of the second set. Capitalizing on a kill from Kaya, Oberlin rallied with another slew of points to stay alive in the set. Oberlin pulled within one at 12-11, forcing the Comets to call a timeout and reset their game plan. Coming out of the timeout, Capital strung together a 13-5 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
As with the first and second sets, Oberlin took the opening point, a kill from Jendsen to Welton. Swapping leads, the Yeowomen began to pull away after a service ace by Dufour gave Oberlin a five-point buffer at 10-5. Continuing their momentum, the Crimson and Gold led by as much as 18-9 with the finish line in sight.
Capital's offense came alive as they faced defeat in the third set, putting together an 11-2 run that stunned Oberlin at 20-20. With momentum now on the side of the home team, Oberlin could do little to compete as Capital completed the third-set comeback for a 25-22 victory.
Oberlin returns to the court when they travel to Wooster for the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic. They'll compete in a pair of matches against Geneva and Pitt-Greensburg on Friday, September 13. The Crimson and Gold are set to serve first at 4:30 p.m., with the second match following right after.
