ADA, OH – Taking on their second nationally recognized team in just as many games, the Oberlin College men's soccer team fell 4-0 against #15 Ohio Northern on Sunday afternoon. The Yeomen move to 0-2-0 ahead of their return home on Wednesday night.
Second-year keeper
Vince Fortuna earned his first career start in cage in the Sunday match, collecting a pair of saves against the Polar Bears.
Grayson Benson came in for second-half relief, although not recording a save in the match, the rookie shutout the ONU attack.
For the Yeomen, a quartet of rookies earned starts including
Walter Gomez-Torres,
Kelan Fay,
Ryan Vasko, and
Hudson Gazdak. Gomez-Torres led the offense with a pair of shots while putting just one on target.
Xander Francoeur also recorded a shot on goal, in addition to Auggie Smith, Fay, Vasko, and Gazdak.
After holding the Polar Bears scoreless for the first ten minutes of play, the Crimson and Gold gave way to two quick goals to fall behind early. ONU added one more score before the half.
The Yeomen came out with renewed firepower in the second half, controlling the offense and recording a shot on cage right away. Oberlin's best chance to score came in the 78' when
Graham Field weaved the ball through a pair of Polar Bears to connect with Gomez-Torres. The first-year sensation had a one-on-one chance with the ONU goalie, but the home keeper made a well-timed tackle to stifle the Obie's momentum.
The Yeomen come back to Shults Field for their next match against Grove City on Wednesday, September 4. Kock off is set for 7 p.m.
